On June 11, the Destiny developers made a big call for their long-standing title. They flipped the switch on skill based-matchmaking, which has been one of the most controversial topics in gaming over the past few years. There were a few reasons Bungie decided to remove the unpopular feature from all but their most competitive PvP modes. A few more people were playing Destiny in general, sure, but that always happens when a new season begins. Others came back amid the growing hype for Beyond Light too. This week, however, that all changed. During the first days of Iron Banner, nearly one million players piled in to play. Yesterday, it had Enhanced armor mods have also been added as rewards, Bungie confirmed , and players can collect pinnacle gear there too.

Bungie is doing away with skill-based matchmaking for most Crucible modes as it apparently made the experience less enjoyable. Some of the cited reasons are longer queue times and potential lag. The new matchmaking is supposed to be connection-based so we should technically have fewer lag glitches where we keep shooting a Guardian and nothing happens.
Similarly, this should help with hit registration but it remains to be seen how the system will work in reality. For example, the TWAB mentioned that queue times should be lower now but we didn’t experience a noticeable difference so far. The matchmaking change has been applied to all playlist except for Elimination, Survival and Survival: Freelance. These modes will continue with skill-based matchmaking due to the players fighting for Glory as opposed to Valor resets.
Similarly, Trials of Osiris will continue to use card-based matchmaking so you rewards will not merely depend on whether you will be queued up with strong players who have connection similar to yours. According to the TWAB , Bungie are aiming to make Crucible more appealing to casual players as it is now supposed to be a mode “where the outcome of the match isn’t as important as enjoying the experience”.
Additionally, they are looking to “play into the strengths of Crucible being a bombastic, frenetic action game”. That description might fit Rumble well but considering Control has more depth built into the objectives, it’s hard to imagine someone is going in for “frenetic action” instead of an objective-based mode.

Luke Smith delivered the third and final piece to his epically long Director’s Cut, a series of blog posts that provide unprecedented insight into the Destiny 2 development process at Bungie. For many, fans were anticipating part three for the PvP updates, an aspect of the game that has been lacking for quite some time. The real meat of the PvP discussion begins in full in Part 3, where Smith acknowledges that while Destiny 2 continues get to tuned behind the scenes as well as new pinnacle rewards, there’s a lot to this side of the game that is missing.
As he points out, there hasn’t been a new permanent game mode, game modes from the first game are still missing in action, and there isn’t a public facing Crucible team to communicate directly with. As such it became a mode that didn’t have a lot going on, even if most were wondering what direction it was going in. The biggest change coming when Shadowkeep and New Light launch is changing the playlist structure.
Quickplay and Competitive, two staples of the Crucible menu, are getting removed from the Director completely. Instead, players can select Classic Mix, a playlist that is based on player connection and includes Control, Clash, and Supremacy game modes.
I’ve been on solo teams that smash a stacked team and vice versa. It is a tad silly that a pre-made of 6 pick Quickplay vs. Regarding IB, one just has to deal with the pre-made teams, plus realize a lot of non-PvP folks play IB because of the gear.
The only modes that still have it are Survival and Elimination. PC Gamer outlined the reasoning behind this sudden change: Bungie said the.

PvP features objective-based modes, as well as traditional deathmatch game modes. Guardians are tasked with reviving a celestial being called the Traveler, while journeying to different planets to investigate and destroy the alien threats before humanity is completely wiped out. There are five items in each category to choose from, and acquiring them should feel a little more fulfilling than getting Crucible gear in the past. Even the most skilled Destiny 2 player is going to have a hard time dealing with two enemies attacking at once, and it will be much harder for the other team to ambush you if you have a teammate with you.

Here is how ” optional ” matchmaking would work. Once activated, the game will automatically look for team mates for you like it does in strike missions and stuff. People have different schedules, so even if a player had an abundance of friends playing Destiny; playing with them can still be a challenge because of such things like But, what I am curious about is how many people that LIKE this game have been locked out of the ” end game content ” because of the lack of ” optional ” matchmaking?
I’m sorry to say this, but Destiny 2 is going to be a massive failure if ” optional ” matchmaking isn’t implemented in it. As much as I’ve enjoyed Destiny, and as great as TTK is looking at least if the hype talk is accurate , there’s a good chance I’ll pass on it just because of the limited matchmaking options.

Bungie recently revealed that they were removing skill-based matchmaking from all but the most competitive of PVP modes for a number of reasons. At the heart of all this reasoning was the core gameplay concept that loading times would be smaller between matches, because it would take less time to match Guardians up against one another. In Destiny 1 there was no skill-based matchmaking. It was fun and frantic, and all the more satisfying when you managed to completely destroy a Guardian who was way ahead of you in level of Power Level.
It was also great to see a Guardian with the best Exotic of the moment get completely owned by someone with a common rarity weapon, which I did a lot. Still, at least now this feature has been removed. Image Source: PC Invasion. I’m an avid Destiny 2 fan and player. I really enjoy playing with other Guardians, speculating about the lore, and writing about as much of the Destiny universe as I can.
